To be continued

26-Nov-07

 -----------------------------------------

In the studio recently I was painting and I thought that the painting was going well .

I was thinking about colour. Bright colour . Bright boats . Bright sky. Bright sea. Bright houses ……………… Need I go on ??

As I often do , I sat at the other side of the studio and stared at the painting ……….it was doing nothing !!! ………….I stared at it ………..how could I get it so wrong ????

I attacked the painting with heavy brush loads of paint …………..dark colour on the wall immediately made the red of the boat richer …………….. the sky came alive ………..the sand took on texture and movement …….. gradually the painting was becoming alive ………….and I was feeling so much more inspired .

There is a long way to go with this painting …………..but I re learned a lesson this afternoon. I need to get inside each new painting . I must forget all other paintings ……….. get into the paint and let the painting lead me .

I will show you the painting when it is finished.

Bye for now !!

For any new visitors to my website here are some basic facts :

I was born in Cornwall in 1943.

I was first inspired to be a painter by my Art teacher at Helston Grammar School (Philip Howells ) and I entered Falmouth School of Art in 1961. Later I specialised in Art in my three years at the West Midlands College.

!967 to 1995 were spent as a teacher but then the response to my exhibitions in 93 and 94 inspired me to leave teaching in 1995 and I have since concentrated all my energies into my painting.

My work has been shown in London and Edinburgh , in America and in many galleries throughout the Westcountry .

For information about where my work is currently showing,

email me at: dhosking2000@yahoo.co.uk

I love the adventure of the journeys that I take in creating the paintings, and I am thrilled by peoples response to them.

The passion of the collectors of my work is a priceless gift .

Painting notes...... Influences

27-Feb-05
INSPIRATION AND INFLUENCES
A student recently asked me if I had been influenced by the work of the Fauves.
This is an extract from my reply.
"The inspiration to create a particular painting can be triggered by an amazing variety of factors ............... sometimes generated by the "subject" ............ sometimes related to other artistic expressions...........and so on ................. but the inspiration for me to become a painter in the first place did come from the excitement and passion for me in the work of a number of the artists who were linked in the brief life of Fauvism.
The artist whose work was the strongest inspiration for me to become a painter was Van Gogh and his work is considered to be one of the strongest influences that led to Fauvism .
Van Gogh is one of my favourite artists ever.
Another artist whose work was and always is very inspiring for me is Cezanne ............ and strangely enough ........... his work also is considered to be a major influence leading to the development of Fauvism.
I thinkthat in the work of Van Gogh I have been particularly inspired by his use of colour and the passion of his painting style ............... and from the work of Cezanne I have learned so much about structure in nature and in painting.
Another "father of Fauvism" was Paul Gauguin ............. often people studying my work have commented that they find similarities between some of my paintings and some of Gauguins work, particularly in relation to colour and the use of flat areas of colour within the composition.
Two other artists who were involved in the work of the Fauves, Matisse and Braque , have also been very strong influences on me as an artist.
Colour and the relationship of different areas of colour within a painting are very important factors in a painting for me and I have learned a vast amount about these aspects of painting from the work of these artists ."

The world within a painting

10-Feb-05

I think that the journey of the creation of a painting is a journey through the worlds within the painting. Layer upon layer.

A friend of mine recently described " the paintings within the painting that other people will never see "

The many worlds that make up the finished painting are layers of reality like the layers of reality that make up our "normal " world. And the layers of "reality" that we can visit in a dream.

The night before last ........ I think.......... anyway................ I had been awake ........... . then I fell asleep and I had a really involved ....weird dream ............ it involved me being in a city .........in a building where there were lots of families staying ............. and of people slipping through the tiny space under a closed door !!.......... I did as well !!!!...........then in crowded streets ............... then on a country path .......and I knew that I needed to hurry so I started running ............ and I was thinking ........... "Wouldn't it be strange if this was in a dream....... if real life was actually in some kind of dream" .........and then I thought " well no of course............ I can tell that this is not a dream because everything is so real".................. the grass ......I could feel it beneath my feet ............... the sky was real ............ the countryside and the breeze on my face were all totally real

Then I came to a village and again there were lots of people..................and I was feeling very sad ....and I wanted for someone to speak to me .....to ask me if I was OK ...........but no one did ............... I came to a wooden house and there was a young woman leaning against the wall ............... and I wanted for her to speak to me................but she ignored me ................ and so I went into the house and sat at a table inside................. I found that in my hand I was holding a short piece of stick that looked as if it had fallen from a tree.................... Then the door opened and in walked a fair haired man ................ he did not look like me ........... but somehow I knew that it was me ................. I stood up and walked towards him ........telling him that I was sad and confused................ I saw him look at the table where he could see the stick that I had brought and then I realised that he was carrying an identical piece of stick .................... he held my arms and said ........."Come on ...we will ask about it " ....................and then I woke ...............and it took quite a while for me to realise that it had been a dream.

The strangest aspects of the dream were the fact that I knew that this man was me (or some other me ???) and also when I thought that I might be in a dream but then rejected that thought because everything really was sooooo real .............. I mean ................we only know what we see and feel ................. what is reality ?????

During this time David's painting developed through various stages from pure abstract work to figurative landscapes and eventually evolved into the strong, soulful compositions for which he is widely known today.

It was not until the early nineties that David began to exhibit his work regularlybut through his solo exhibitions his work has subsequently attracted a wide international following.

Hosking paintings can now be found in collections throughout Europe, North and South America, Canada, Africa, Australia, the Far East and Japan. Some ofDavid's paintings are published as prints in Britain and America and are sold throughout the world.

David was first inspired to become a painter by the enthusiasm and knowledge of his Art teacher at Helston, Philip Howells. The work of artists such as Van Gogh, Paul Klee, Cezanne, and Matisse formed the seeds of his lifelong love of colour and shape in and painting, which reverberates still in the excitement of his own work.
